“You’ve brought us delight for 37 years.”
In honour of Neighbours’ final episode airing tonight in the UK after 37 years on television, EastEnders has paid tribute to the Australian soap opera with an unique sketch and farewell notes.
The BBC soap opera tweeted a video with the following caption: “Is that Walford’s Dr. Karl Kennedy? Thank you @Neighbours for 37 fantastic years as a soap opera from everyone at #EastEnders!”
In the comedy, Dr. Karl Kennedy himself (Alan Fletcher) enters the cafe, much to Linda’s (Kellie Bright) joy, who had just expressed her regret about Neighbours’ conclusion.
The Australian actor goes after Linda takes a selfie with him, and the EastEnders cast members sincerely bid Neighbours farewell.
Tameka Empson, who played Kim Fox, Max Bowden, Ben Mitchell, Balvinder Sopal, Suki Panesar, Natalie Cassidy, Sonia Fowler, Charlie Brooks, Sam Mitchell, Gurlaine Kaur Garcha, Ash Panesar, Jamie Borthwick, and Danny Dyer were among those saying goodbye (Mick Carter).
Added Cassidy: “You’ve brought us joy for 37 years, and I’m really sorry to see that you’re leaving,” Brooks said, adding, “What a great run. When I watched it, Scott and Charlene had my complete attention.”
One of the founding stars of Neighbours, Stefan Dennis, who plays Paul Robinson, thinks the soap opera deserves another shot after its shocking cancellation.
He expressed the following exclusively to Digital Spy: “Why shouldn’t the ABC, which is owned by the Australian public, take on the task of terminating the show as it is a financially sound decision?
“The Australian people would then essentially own Neighbours, carrying on the tradition of hiring performers, crew, production personnel, and providing them with training.
“There have been a staggering number of people who have received training and skills through Neighbours during the past 37 years. There are tens of thousands of them. So I think it’s incredibly unfortunate to lose something like that.”
