In memory of June Brown, EastEnders recreated her debut scene 37 years later.

In yesterday night’s (Monday, June 4) episode of EastEnders, the show recreated Dot Cotton’s opening scene as a heartfelt homage to June Brown, the legendary character.

On July 4, 1985, June made her debut as Dot Cotton in EastEnders. To mark the occasion, the serial decided to pay clever homage by having Sonia Fowler, Dot’s granddaughter, appear in the episode (Natalie Cassidy).

Give us a tea, Kath, and a glass of water so I can take a paracetamol, Sonia remarked to Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) as she entered the café wearing a trench coat identical to Dot’s.

When Dot walked into the café 37 years ago, she spoke these as her first words as she made her Square debut.

Then, as she continued, Sonia made a reference to the famous soap character: “That early shift was a nightmare. I feel like I’ve prayed to the Lord so frequently that I’m starting to resemble Dot, you know?

You can view the soap opera’s behind-the-scenes video of how they reenacted the scenario below.

After spending 31 years as Dot Cotton in the long-running soap opera, June sadly passed away in April at the age of 95. She was regarded as a national treasure.

Over the years, she was involved in some major plots, such as Nasty Nick’s murder scheme, in which her son, played by John Altman, intended to poison her so he could steal her enormous bingo winnings to spend on drugs.

Fans were on the edge of their seats as the plot developed, thank goodness he changed his mind at the last minute.

“June’s adoring warmth, wit, and amazing sense of humour will never be forgotten. There are not enough words to express how much she was loved and adopted by everyone at EastEnders. Dot Cotton, a character June developed, became one of the most recognisable on British television and in British soap operas alike. Having starred in 2884 episodes, June’s outstanding performances were responsible for some of EastEnders’ most memorable scenes.

“To June’s family and friends, we express our love and sincere condolences.

“EastEnders has lost a really bright light today, but we will all toast June with a lovely sherry.” Our darling June, may you rest in peace. You won’t be forgotten ever.
