Emmett, the actress from Home and Away, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999, the same year that McManus first met her.
Before Emmett’s death at age 32 following an eight-year cancer fight, they were married in 2005.
The TV presenter acknowledged to “shutting down” whenever he was questioned about his wife, but he assured Rowe that he appreciated the public’s concern for his well-being during his wife’s sickness and eventual death.
On his show, McManus claimed he would provide “a very brief answer” to questions from visitors.
Being an interviewer himself, McManus recognised that certain “no-go zones” with an interviewee are commonly known, and if you are planning to elicit further information, it is often “a roll of the dice”.
“You can either work around that or be ready for the possibility that someone who has been outgoing, lively, and forthcoming suddenly shuts down.
And I definitely would do that.
“I would cut off communication and perhaps provide a warning, but there were occasions when I would figuratively just sit there with my arms crossed and declare, ‘I’m just not going to talk about it.
“That’s the only way you could get through it.”
In 2009, McManus wed Tasma Walton, an actress, to become his wife.
Ruby, their daughter, is eight years old.
